White elephant

This term is used to describe something that is big, has little use, and expensive to maintain. These things often seem great at first, but after a while they become annoying because they are too costly and of little use.

Example:
“Many people are worried that the new stadium being built for the Olympics will become a white elephant after the games are finished.”

この表現は、何か大きなもので、ほとんど使用しないもの、そして維持するのに高くつくものを表すのに使います。　これらのものは、最初はすごく良く思えますが、しばらくすると、あまり使わないのに高くつくことで腹立たしくなってきます。

例：
「多くの人は、オリンピックのために建設されている新しいスタジアムが、ゲームが終わったあと、やっかいになるのではないかと心配しています。」
