Tongue in cheek

If you say something “tongue in cheek”, you are making a joke. You intend the listener to understand that your comment is a joke, although you might appear to be serious.

Example: “He said that he was fantastic dancer, although I suspect that was tongue in cheek.”

Similar to sarcasm, tongue in cheek comments may be difficult for language learners to catch immediately. You may check by asking, “Is that tongue in cheek?” or “Are you being sincere?”

Tongue in cheek　という表現は、ジョークを言っているという意味で使われます。見た目は真面目に話しているようだけれど、相手に冗談を言っているという表現です。

　　例）「彼は素晴らしいダンサーだって自分で言っていたよ。冗談で言っていたと思うのだけど。」　

皮肉とも似ているので、言語の学習者には難しく、ニュアンスがすぐには分からないかもしれません。　「それはふざけて（Tongue in cheek）言っているの？」、「本当に言っているの？」と聞いてみるといいですね。
