The dictionary defines the phrase “supposed to” as similar in meaning to “expected or obliged”. This definition is a little vague and tells us little about how to use the phrase naturally in conversations.
Three of the most popular uses of “supposed to” are:
To give advice – That’s not how you make cup ramen. You’re supposed to put HOT water, not cold! (An expected action.)
To indicate actions that are required – Where have you been? You were supposed to be here 30 minutes ago. (An obligation)
To indicate actions that are prohibited – You’re not supposed to walk on the grass!
In these ways, “supposed to” and “not supposed to” may be replaced by “should” and “shouldn’t”.
