For example, the word ‘film’ is equal in meaning to the word ‘movie’, but which do native speakers use? Well, the answer is the word ‘movie’ is used 15 times more often than the word ‘film’. Some other interesting statistics: “See you later” is used approximately four times more that “I’ll see you later”. “Yeah” is far more popular than “yes”. “I don’t know” is the most common 3-word phrase. “Exactly”, “Definitely” and “Absolutely” are all in the top 600 most used words. Looking through similar studies online, or just listening to the actual words used in actual conversations, can be a great way for learners to start sounding more natural.
