～IELTSで高スコアを取るための勉強のコツ～

このコーナーでは、IELTSの勉強法がわからないと感じている方に、お勧めの勉強法をご紹介します！
今回はライティング2回目です！
さて、エッセイの構成はその課題のタイプによるとお話ししましたが、そのタイプはいくつに分かれるのでしょうか？

1. What types of questions are there?

Well, if your essay structure depends on the type of question, how many different types of questions are there?
There are basically 5 types of Task 2 questions:

1. Opinion (agree or disagree)

This type of question asks you to state your opinion about a topic. It might be phrased as an agree/disagree question. You state your opinion in the introduction, support it in the body paragraphs and then restate it in the conclusion.
E.g. Computers allow us to interact with all parts of society online. Soon it will be unnecessary for people to leave their homes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2. Argument (talk about both sides of an issue)

This type of question requires a more balanced answer, so you need to look at both sides of an issue. First, give background information on the issue in the Introduction, then write one body paragraph from either side of the issue, and finally, state your opinion in the conclusion.
E.g. Computers allow us to carry out many daily activities from home. Some believe this is a positive trend. Others believe that there are many negative points to this. Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.

3. Problem and solution

This type of question may ask you to describe different aspects of a particular problem and suggest possible solutions to it. Sometimes you will be given a problem and asked only to propose solutions.
E.g. People are more reliant on their computers than ever before. List some of the problems associated with this trend and propose several solution. (**This can be written as “what should we do to solve this problem?”)

4. Advantages and disadvantages

This is very similar to an argumentative essay because it looks at two sides – the positive and negative – of a topic.
E.g. Computers are standard items in most houses these days. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of this situation.

5. Cause-effect

This type of essay, as the name suggests, requires you to explain the causes of a situation and the possible effects.
E.g. The online shopping industry continues to grow. Discuss the main causes for this, and explain its effects.

Now that you know the different types of questions that you may be asked, the next step is to learn to recognize each type. This way, the type of essay you write will be sure to match the question – an essential point for getting a high score in the IELTS test. We will look at how to do this in the next tip.
