I.e. vs. E.g.

In English writing, two common abbreviations are “i.e.” and “e.g.”
These both come from Latin and are often misunderstood and misused.

i.e. = id est
e.g. = exempli gratia

Either can be used to clarify a preceding statement.
The first does this by restating the idea more clearly or expanding it, the second by giving one or more examples.

I try to make the most of my free time； i.e., I don’t like to stay home on my days off.
I try to make the most of my free time; e.g.,  going camping, playing sports, and meeting friends.

英語では、よく用いられる2つの略語として “i.e.”＝「すなわち」と“e.g.”「＝例えば」が一般的にあげられます。
これらはラテン語から来ていて、よく間違った理解や使い方をされています。

i.e. = すなわち
e.g. = 例

どちらも前の文章をはっきりさせるために使います。
1つ目は、より明確に言い換えたり、話を発展させることにより、はっきりさせます。
2つ目は、例をあげて、話を明確にします。

私はできるだけ空き時間を利用します。すなわち、私は休みの日に家にいるのが好きではありません。
私はできるだけ空き時間を利用します。例えば、キャンプに行ったり、スポーツをしたり、友人に会ったりします。
