A catch-22 is a situation in which you can’t achieve a satisfactory result because each alternative action has negative consequences. Basically, there is no clear way out of the difficult situation. It’s a ‘lose-lose’ situation.
Look at the following examples:
1. I need to buy a new car so that I can get a job. I need money to buy a car. To get money I need a job. However, I can’t get a job because I don’t have a car. It’s a catch 22.
2. A man eats too much because he is depressed. He is depressed because he is overweight. He is overweight because he eats too much; however, he can’t stop eating because he’s depressed. It’s a catch 22.
A catch-22とは、どちらの選択にも否定的な結果があるために、満足な結果を成し遂げることができない状況を言います。基本的に、難しい状況ではっきりとした出口がなく、「不利」な状況を言います。
