During my first few years in Japan, whenever I met someone for the first time, the conversation would quickly turn to hobbies. When asked, “What do you like to do in your free time?”, I would answer immediately, “I love playing sports.” It was who I was – a sportsman.
Now, when I am asked the same question, I tend to hesitate. I still love sports, but you see, my life has changed. Greater responsibilities at work and home mean I no longer have much spare time. And, to be honest, I am not as young and healthy as I used to be. So then, what is an aging sports-fan supposed to do? The answer: fantasy sports.
Fantasy sports leagues are usually based online and cater for all sports. There are fantasy leagues for US Major League Baseball http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/fb/info/index.jsp, American Football, NHL Ice Hockey and, of course, all major soccer leagues, including the English Premier League soccer http://fantasy.premierleague.com/. It is even possible to play Fantasy golf! http://www.pgatour.com/fantasy.html Right now, I am currently involved an Australian Rules Football fantasy league with players from 3 countries.
Each game has its own unique set of rules, but they all allow you to create your own team, select your favorite players, and compete against your friends and coworkers. You score points according to how your selected players performed in their real game, and the fantasy team with the highest score wins. In this way, you can savior the joy of victory and suffer the agony of defeat. In short, you can still be involved in all the fun and exciting parts of sport without all the hard work and time.
In many countries, the popularity of these fantasy games has grown to the point that they often become the main topic of conversations in the office and at social events. Even sports announcers now refer to them during live broadcasts of the actual game.
However, I have not heard much about Japanese fantasy sports and would like to know more about them. Are there leagues for Japanese baseball or soccer? How about sumo? If so, why are they not more popular? I wonder if it is simply because there are only a few such fantasy sports sites here in Japan, or if it reflects a more significant cultural difference.
Please share any comments or advice you have about fantasy sports.
