Accept vs. Except

These two words sound the same in spoken English; however, when written their meanings become obvious and change the meaning of a sentence completely.

Accept is a verb meaning ‘to receive’.
Example: Please accept this gift.

Except is usually a preposition meaning ‘excluding’.
Example: I like all Japanese food except natto.

**It is worth noting that except can be used as a verb meaning ‘to exclude’. (It is seldom used in this way in everyday English.)
Example: Please except that item from the list.

これらの2つの言葉は同じように発音しますが、意味は明らかに異なっており、意味も完全に違います。

Accept は動詞で「受け入れる」という意味があります。
例：どうぞこの贈り物を受け取ってください。

Exceptはいつも前置詞で「除いて」という意味があります。
例：私は納豆を除いた全ての日本食が好きです。

**exceptは「除く」という意味の動詞としても使われることがあります。（日常会話の中ではめったに使われません。）

例：どうかそのアイテムをリストから外してください。
